The Meadow vole is a small North American vole found across Canada, Alaska and the northern United States. Its range extends further south along the Atlantic coast. One subspecies, the Florida Salt Marsh Vole is found only in Florida, and is classified as endangered. The Rock Vole, Microtus chrotorrhinus, is a medium-sized vole found in eastern North America. It is also called the Yellow-nosed Vole. They are found on moist rocky slopes in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States.

The field vole or short-tailed vole, is a grey-brown vole, around 110mm in length, with only a short tail. They are one of the most common mammals in Europe. The European water vole is also widespread throughout Europe, being found in Scandinavia and western Russia on the banks of slow flowing, well vegetated rivers and streams. The common vole is another species that is not restricted in means of distribution and habitat and inhabits large areas of Eurasia.

The water vole is the largest and most famous of the four vole species that live in the UK. It is known for being the inspiration behind 'Ratty' in Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows; water rat is a local name for this species.

The accidental introduction of the American mink and the pollution of British rivers have had a devastating impact on the population. The other three vole species found in Britain are the Orkney vole, field vole and bank vole.
