Vole FAQ

Many of the frequently asked questions about voles relate to their appearance and voles are often confused with similar looking rodents such as moles, shrews and mice.

Vole FAQ - What's the difference between a mouse and a vole?
The differences between mice and voles are not very significant. Mice have large eyes, large ears and long tails (at least as long as their bodies). Voles have smaller eyes, smaller ears concealed in their fur and shorter tails.

Vole FAQ - What is the Difference Between a Mole and a Vole?
Moles are usually larger than voles and their long, protruding snouts look quite different to the blunt noses that voles have. Moles for the most part have black fur which is darker than voles whose fur is brown (the shade varies from species to species). A big difference between them is that moles are carnivorous and eat grubs, worms, spiders and insect larvae, while a vole's diet mainly consists of green vegetation such as grasses and roots.

Voles can become a pest if they live in large numbers close to human dwellings as they can damage lawns and eat garden plants. So many vole questions are about the best ways to stop vole damage.

Vole FAQ - How to get rid of Voles
A popular way to get rid of voles is to use chemical vole repellents. Most commercial repellents contain thiram, which is a fungicide. It repels animals effectively but needs to be re-applied frequently and can't be used on garden plants. Organic vole repellents are also available which contain the scent of vole's predators like the fox & bobcat. It tricks voles into thinking that predators are in the area so they instinctively stay away.

Vole FAQ - How to Kill Voles
The most effective way to exterminate voles is to use poison baits (rodenticides). However poison baits are potentially hazardous to other wildlife, children and pets. Another method to kill voles is to place traps at the entrances of vole runways and burrows. Peanut butter is an excellent bait for trapping voles.
